Web Terms
ASP
Developed by Microsoft. Dynamically creates a web page from a database.
ASP
Also may mean a "Application Service Provider". An ASP
can provide an application over the web without you having to buy
it and put it on your computer.
Broadband
Size of the Internet connect. Broadband and megaband, ensure that
enough information is getting through your computer.
Browser
The application that you use to view the Internet. AOL IS A SERVICE
PROVIDER NOT A BROWSER. The 2 main browsers are Microsoft Internet
Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
Cascading
NavBars
Navigation's that expands - showing sub navigation.
CGI
Common Gateway Interface. Used mostly to generate information on
a website. For example a Mortgage Calculator, eCommerce Solutions.
Used in most programming.
Data-driven
Websites
A Website where very little to no HTML is used. The web server stores
information which is put together to create pages. Allows users
with little HTML or programming knowledge make changes and change
their Website. An example would be Half.com and Amazon.
DHTML
Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language. A more complex version of HTML
that creates broader and more powerful webpages, such as simple
animation and cascading Navigation.
E-mail
Client
The program that you use to view your e-mail. E-mail clients would
be Outlook Express, Entourage, Netscape Mail, and AOL.
FDML
A file format used by NetCloak to create e-mail forms and e-mail
response pages.
Flash
Developed by Macromedia, and very versatile. It can be used
to create a Navigation, Games, Interactive Websites, and Animation's.
Does not use HTML at all. Flash is its own program and requires
users to have the Flash Plug in installed on their computer. Some
browsers and users however don't have the flash plug-in installed
and therefor require a HTML version of the Website to function.
Many times 2 versions of a Website may need to be created to satisfy
both Flash and HTML users.
Frames
Basically frames are a combination or multiple webpages viewed on
single page. Frames allow Websites to have one page change and one
stay for items such as navigation or sponsor graphics. Frames are
somewhat outdated and rarely used in professional Websites. Frames
may also cause complications with certain web browsers.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol - The language in which files transfer onto
the web server.
GIF
Originally created by CompuServe. GIF's and JPEG's are the most
common used web images forms. GIF's are generally used for flat
,reduced colored images such as logo's, and line art. JPEG's are
mainly for photographs.
HTML
Hypertext markup language. Main language used for Website creation.
IP
Address
IP's have 2 purposes. First, every time you log onto your Internet
provider, you are assigned a IP. Your IP is unique and tells Websites
your are viewing, who you are, and where to send information its
kind a like a phone number in this sense. Second, Each Website is
assigned a IP, this is the location that computers know to look
for the site, its like a house address.
ISP
Internet Service Provider - The company that you use for Internet
access. Companies such as AOL, Earthlink, AT&T.
Java
Developed by Sun Microsystems. Operating language that can be used
on any computer regardless of OS.
Javascript
Language that enables interactive occurrence's such as Roll-overs,
Pop Up Windows, etc. on a Website.
Microsoft
A Large company in Redmond, Washington. That control's every aspect
of your life at every moment.
MP3
Compressed code that allows songs to be compressed enough to be
transported over the Internet. Napster uses MP3's.
Navigation
Based on site map, allows users to move (navigate) easily throughout
your Website.
NCLK
A file format used by NetCloak for simple programming such as password
protection and other tasks.
PDF
Portable Document Format - Created by Adobe. Used for online forms
and printable information. Allows High Quality artwork and forms
to be compressed for online viewing.
Quicktime
Quicktime is a rich file format, the perfect environment for media
authoring, and a complete suite of applications all rolled into
one. Quicktime enables millions of Mac and Windows users to play
back high-quality audio and video on their computers.
Server
A Computer that host's (stores) your information for users on the
Internet to d/l and view. Servers have to be online 24 hours a day
in order for Internet users to view your Website.
Tables
Building block of web pages, helps to line up images, and for different
layouts on a webpage.
UNIX
Type of server built by Sun Microsystems. Most web servers use this
language to host webpages due that is compatible to both PC's and
Macintosh computers.
URL
Universal Resource Locator - The address associated with the IP
for a specific Website. URL's end with a combinations of letters
such as .COM and .NET (used for regular Websites), .ORG (used for
nonprofit Websites) and .GOV (Used for government Websites).
